The Medical Device Network has announced that the Lifevest Wearable Defibrillator is one of the five most innovative and life changing medical devices of 2009. Manufactured by ZOLL in the USA, the Lifevest is only available through Dot Medical in the UK.

Reporter Frances Penwill-Cook of the UK- based Medical Device Network explained: “The Lifevest was selected because we felt it was technologically exceptional, that it would experience widespread use due to functionality and that it would have a significant impact upon patient care.”

The Lifevest Wearable Defibrillator is used for a wide range of patient conditions or situations including patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, following a heart attack, before or after bypass surgery or stent replacement, as well as for those with cardiomyopathy, people waiting for pacemakers or heart transplants or congestive heart failure that places them at particular risk.

Richard A Packer, chairman and CEO of ZOLL said, “To receive this designation from a large and respected Internet reference portal indicates that the Lifevest is gaining visibility on the international front as a standard of care. The Lifevest Wearable Defibrillator has protected more than 21,000 patients at high risk of sudden cardiac arrest.”

The Lifevest is lightweight and east to wear, allowing patients to return to their activities of daily living while having peace of mind that they are protected from sudden cardiac arrest. The Lifevest continually monitors the patient’s heart and if a life threatening heart rhythm is detected, the device delivers a treatment shock to restore normal heart rhythm.

Ian Rankin, of Dot Medical, said ‘We are delighted at the recognition of the ZOLL Lifevest as one of the most innovative, life-changing devices of 2009. The Lifevest can quite literally save lives. It is technologically exceptional and it can transform the care offered by hospitals to individuals who wear the Lifevest and to their families.”
