Sleep apnoea is a major chronic disease that can have cardiovascular consequences. Around 40–50% of people with atrial fibrillation (AF) have obstructive sleep apnoea, rising to around 60% in patients with implantable cardiac devices and pacemakers. Sleep apnoea symptoms are masked in cardiac patients and cardiac patients are very low, making the disease hard to diagnose. Embedded sensors in pacemakers now help to screen for sleep apnoea with sleep apnoea monitoring and confirm that it has been treated effectively, improving cardiac disease outcomes.

Professor Pépin, Head of the Physiology Department at CHU, Grenoble and Professor Defaye, Head of Rhythmology and cardiac stimulation department at CHU and discuss the importance of detecting sleep apnoea in cardiac patients and the technology that helps them.
