The Cardiac & Vascular Institute is the first organisation in the North Central Florida USA area of the USA to offer patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation an alternative to long-term warfarin medication with the newly approved Watchman left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) implant.

Interventional cardiologist, Arthur Lee, and electrophysiologist, N Raj Subramanian, performed the first LAAC procedures at North Florida Regional Medical Center (Gainesville, USA).

For patients with atrial fibrillation who are considered suitable for warfarin by their physicians but who have reason to seek a non-drug alternative, the Watchman LAAC implant is designed to offer an alternative to reduce the risk of atrial-fibrillation-related stroke.

“The new Watchman LAAC implant provides physicians with a breakthrough stroke risk reduction option for patients with non-valvular AF,” says Lee. “For patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who are seeking an alternative to warfarin, this left atrial appendage implant offers a potentially life-changing stroke risk treatment option which could free them from the challenges of long-term warfarin therapy.”
