The cardiologist and researcher, Harlan M Krumholz (Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, USA), has been named editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), the flagship journal of the American College of Cardiology.

“The opportunities ahead for JACC to be a force of good for our patients, our profession and society are enormous,” Krumholz said. “JACC has the potential to shape the future of cardiology. I am eager to engage with our community worldwide to build on its past successes and find new ways to contribute to achieving ever better patient outcomes and more equitable, effective, efficient and evidence-based clinical care.”

Krumholz is the Harold H Hines, Jr professor of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine and director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation.

He brings years of experience including serving as founding editor of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes; founding editor of CardioExchange, a scientific social media platform of the New England Journal of Medicine; and editor of Journal Watch Cardiology of the New England Journal of Medicine. In addition, he co-founded medRxiv, a preprint server for clinical medicine.

“I will emphasise inclusion, impact, and inspiration, positioning the journal to provide evidence and wisdom to guide us through a rapidly evolving landscape of cardiology, as we seek to maximise the possibilities for great advances and mitigate, and even avoid, the potential for harm,” he said.

Krumholz will begin transitioning into the position in January 2024, officially beginning his five-year term on 1 July 2024. He will build on the foundations established by current JACC editor-in-chief Valentin Fuster (Mount Sinai Health System, New York, USA).

“Harlan’s creativity will allow JACC to positively evolve with these rapidly changing times,” Fuster said. “I am excited to see JACC under his editorship.”
