Hartford Hospital Selected as a “centre of excellence” for Sensei X robotic catheter platform

Hansen Medical and the Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI) at Hartford Hospital announced on 20 January that Hansen Medical has selected Hartford Hospital to be a centre of excellence for the Sensei X robotic catheter system where electrophysiologists from around the globe will have the opportunity to be trained on flexible robotics with skilled and experienced physicians in a high-volume electrophysiology lab setting.

This new centre of excellence will serve as the training centre for the Northern United States and is expected to commence operation in February 2012. The hospital has also purchased its second Sensei X robotic catheter system, joining a growing list of leading heart centres worldwide with two or more Sensei X systems.

“The Sensei X robotic catheter system has changed the way we perform complex cardiac procedures. It has also increased the number of procedures we are able to perform in our lab,” said Steven Zweibel, director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Hartford Hospital. “As a result, we are now offering our patients a greater range of minimally invasive cardiac procedures than we could before we acquired our first robotic system.”

“We are pleased with the addition of the second Sensei X robotic catheter system targeted at minimally invasive complex cardiac procedures,” said Steven Shichman, medical director of CESI, and chairman of Peri-operative Services at Hartford Hospital. “It is our intention to create an institutional focus on cardiovascular robotics and to become one of the leading cardiovascular robotics programmes in the world. Becoming a pioneer in flexible robotics will provide our institution with clinical recognition and technological differentiation in many spheres, and will enable us to serve all three of our missions: research, education and clinical activity.”

“Hansen Medical selected Hartford Hospital to be a centre of excellence in the United States for the Sensei X robotic catheter system based on the institution’s strong reputation for providing complex and innovative care and its renowned excellence in patient care, teaching and research,” said Bruce Barclay, president and CEO, Hansen Medical. “We are especially impressed with the clinical excellence of the Cardiac Electrophysiology department under the leadership of Dr. Steven Zweibel and his team and the institutional vision provided by the Hartford Hospital management team.”

About Sensei X robotic catheter system

The Sensei X robotic catheter system combines advanced levels of 3D catheter control and 3D visualisation. This unique, state of the art technology is powered by a highly accurate, robotically controlled arm that allows for catheter navigation, stability and positioning within the patient’s heart, allowing for the following system advantages:

  • Catheter stability with force-sensing
  • Instinctive and precise catheter placement control
  • Reduced radiation for physician and patient
